Space as thousands separator

In Sweden we use a space as separator in currency values, instead of a comma. "1 217 512 kr" for example.
This would be something like "# ##\ _k_r" if formatting using Microsoft Excel.

The problem I am having is when setting the same string in PHPExcel.
The space between the # is changed to "\ " instead of the " " I typed in.
It looks the same when using a number >= 1000, but 999 is formatted as " 999 kr" instead of "999 kr".

Is there a way to specify this "soft" space in PHPExcel?

Oh, Excel handles it automatically according to national settings :)
Using "#,##0" and viewing with swedish settings changes the "," to a space.

Yes, from the Excel file you can only decide whether there should be thousands/decimal separator or not.

But the actual symbols used when one opens the Excel file are controlled by the application itself.
