I want to read an xssx file created using Excel 2003

In my script I use $objReader->canRead($file) to test if the file can be read

It fails on xlsx files created by Excel 2003

Should phpexcel be able to read xlsx files?

It should not matter what version of Excel was used to create an xlsx file. Which reader are you using? (You should be using Excel2007) In what way is it failing? Does it throw any error?

Basically, Excel2007 is the reader for the Excel 2007 native format (Open Office XML or OpenXML format) introduced by Excel 2007 and subsequently by Excel 2010 (and that can be written using earlier versions of Excel when using the compatibility extensions). Excel5 was originally named because it reads the BIFF5 (Binary Interchange File Format version 5) OLE format for Excel95, although it can also read files created by versions of Excel up to Excel2003, which was version 8 of the BIFF format (aka BIFF8).
